Understanding the Ingredients in Teeth Whitening Products: Professional vs Non-Registered Options

If you’ve ever wandered down the dental care aisle or scrolled through your feed and been tempted by At-Home Teeth Whitening Kits promising Hollywood smiles, you’re not alone. With so many products on the marke, some professional, others... not so much, it’s easy to feel a little lost. That’s where we come in.

At Pure Glow Whitening Lounge, based right here in beautiful Perth and run by an AHPRA Registered Oral Health Therapist, we're here to lift the veil on what’s really inside those whitening products and why it matters for your smile and your health.

What’s Actually Whitening Your Teeth?

The secret behind that glow lies in a few key ingredients. But not all are created equal.

🦷 Professional Whitening Products (Like Ours!)

These are used under the supervision of a Registered Dental Professional, which means they’re not just more effective, they’re also much safer.

Hydrogen Peroxide or Carbamide Peroxide

These are the real stars of the show. In Australia, professional-grade At-Home products can contain up to 6% Hydrogen Peroxide or 18% Carbamide Peroxide, allowing them to break down deep stains and brighten teeth significantly.

At Pure Glow Whitening Lounge, our In-Chair products ranges from 25% - 35% Hydrogen Peroxide.

Desensitising Agents (Potassium Nitrate or Fluoride)

These are included to protect your enamel and reduce sensitivity, so you get a whiter smile without the zingers.

Custom Application

Professional products are carefully applied to avoid your gums and soft tissues, reducing the risk of burns or irritation. Plus, we tailor each session based on your dental history, goals and even lifestyle habits.

Non-Registered Whitening Products (Caution: Buyer Beware!)

These include over-the-counter kits, strips, gels and even some too-good-to-be-true online finds. The biggest issue? No regulation and often no supervision.

⚠️ Low or Ineffective Levels of Peroxide

To be legally sold without professional oversight, these products must contain less than 6% Hydrogen Peroxide. Many contain so little, they’re essentially just polishing your teeth, not whitening them in any meaningful way.

⚠️ Acidic Additives or Abrasives

Some non-professional options use acidic or abrasive ingredients to mimic the appearance of whitening but this can actually damage your enamel, leading to long-term sensitivity and discolouration.

⚠️ No Desensitising Ingredients

Without the proper formulation, users often experience uncomfortable sensitivity, gum irritation or uneven whitening.

So, Why Go Pro?

Think of professional whitening as a luxury facial for your teeth. You’re not just getting results, you’re getting care, customisation, and peace of mind, all in the hands of a trained expert.
